I know the Geathers deal wasn’t a popular one. I think we got him for a decent price. Might have overpaid a little, but we know what we got in him. That’s taken for granted. You know he’s not going to explode for a bunch of sacks, but you know he can take on 600lbs of run blocking, and still fill his gap. Plus there’s a reason Dunlap hasn’t been named starter yet. He’s very inconsistent. I’ve got to begin to wonder if we are going to get a deal done with Andre Smith. He wants to be the highest paid ROT in game by a 2M+ cushion. In his defense, it has been stated by the team that he can play LOT. But in a way I don’t think he’s worth it. Part of my belief is that while Anthony Collins is not the best ROT in the game, he is an able starter. And as of right now, he is the projected starter at ROT until we sign a better one. With Smith reportedly in Philly today, obviously we aren’t going to just hand over the money. I wouldn’t blame us if we did pay him big money. But I wouldn’t blame us if we moved on either. In the end he was the best ROT in the NFL last year. And he appears to be past his struggles. But what if he’s not?

I’m still trying to figure out the 15M gap in cap space numbers given by Bengals.com vs figures given by every other major NFL media site. Bengals.com reports recent deals at approx 23M leaving 17M in cap space. They use 40M as the starting number. PFT, NFL, spotrac, ESPN & CBS all report the Bengals starting number as 55M. Minus off the 23M in recent contracts and that leaves 32M. I can only assume that Bengals.com is allocating the 15M to injury and rookie salary pools. I would hope that with Smith, 5 defensive starters, our 3rd CB and PR, and about 10 other UFAs unsigned that we have more than 17M to do it with, or we are about to see this team lose a good deal of talent. Kind of makes you wonder too. We had 12M+ in rollover last year. And we had 25 contracts expire, yet we only have 40M in space!? Doesn’t add up. 40M minus 12M means 25 players, including 7 starters, were only making 28M!? Also means the other 27 players on the roster were making 80M. It almost as confusing as understanding how you can announce a deal for Wallace Gilberry over this weekend of media blackout, and it’s not tampering. But in other instances it will be tampering.

Just seen an article that Chris Crocker will be among 12 attendees at a 3 day officiating clinic held in Baltimore this week. I guess that could mean his agent hasn’t gotten very many phone calls for his services. I didn’t expect us to re-sign him at this point, if at any point. But just like last year I think it could be a mistake not to sign him. I truly think we may have not made the playoffs last year without him. The D was struggling prior to his arrival. It’s something to think about looking at the Ss we currently have on roster. Whether we draft one, promote one of our own, or sign a vet free agent, we have to learn something from last year. You have to have a guy who can line the secondary up right and make adjustments. I think one way or another, considering how many Ss we have under contract right now, that we have to pick another one up. There are some good ones available in free agency. But they probably will command more money than are truly worth. And with Crocker seemingly out of the plans, that leaves drafting one as the only other option. Good thing is there are plenty to choose from in both free agency and the draft.

Nassib got a rocket arm. But I don’t think he’ll make it out of the 2nd round. I wonder where we will consider taking a QB. If I had to guess I would say round 4 or after. We need to always have a young QB in development. You never know when you could lose your starting QB for awhile.
